What Is the Best Security Door?

Gate Security System

Basic Info. On Steel Security Doors

Your front door is what is considered the main entryway from how people can access the interior of your property. With regular doors, it can effectively be opened with lock picking or a well-placed kick on the door. That’s why it’s important to consider heightening your security measures if you require extra protection. With steel security exterior doors or steel security doors for homes or businesses, you’ll be able to customize and fit your doors to the specifications of the frame, tightly fitting them in for added strength and protection. When you’re interested in steel security door installation rely on the experts for secure fittings. There are numerous benefits to steel security doors, here is some information as to how.

What is the best material for an exterior door?

The best material for exterior doors can differ depending on the style and function you’d like your door to serve. When it comes to extra protection, steel security doors are considered the best material.

Is steel or fiberglass the better entry door?

These two materials are often compared to one another as far as when door upgrades are considered. It’s important to realize that although one has more options as far as aesthetics when it comes to security steel security doors are the better option. This is due to the fact that steel security doors are thicker in protective materials at its core and can hold up from impact whereas fiberglass doors are made of lightweight materials that can bend and break if hit hard enough. As of such, if security is not an emphasis here is how they compare to one another. Firstly, steel security doors are cut to the specifications of a doorway with wall frames and anchors added to the fittings of where they need to be installed. Sometimes additional drywall may be needed around the frame. With fiberglass doors, the door frame is measured with hinges placed strategically and the door added into it. As they are prehung they only need to be installed into the hinges and tightened against the frame. Other specifics such as adding additional shims must be conducted by a professional. With energy efficiency, although both types are better than wooden doors with you’ll see that fiberglass options are a bit more energy efficient due to their ability to work with climate changes as they can expand and contract to changes in temperatures.

Do steel doors rust?

Steel doors that aren’t coated should be hosed down and oiled often as they can rust. (They won’t need any cleaning, however.) With galvanized steel (steel that’s coated in zinc oxide) you’ll have not only corrosion and rust resistance but you’ll also have resistance to scratches. Metal doors, in general, come with a pre-finish coat of weather-resistant paint yet there are a variety of paints you can use on top of steel. As of such, with weather-resistant coatings, you can protect peeling from snow, rain or other effects of the weather.

Close Up of A Door With Locks

  • Can’t Be Kicked Open
  • Helps Withstand Harsh Weather
  • Is Fitted Into Frame
  • Keys Are Only Duplicated By a Manufacturer
  • Hinges Are Hidden
  • Keyless Locks Can Be Added

How can I improve my front door security?

Instead of getting blind repair for ideal peeping abilities consider more technological advancements that can provide additional security to your steel security doors. There are many ways in which you can upgrade your home’s front door security.  One such way can be to add security cameras to the entry and even combine it with an alarm in order to notify you of what is being caught on the monitor. With a smart lock or smart doorbell, you may be able to monitor and program your door with the ease of your smartphone. Another way you can improve on the security of your door is by incorporating keyless locks such as scanners or other heightened technology. What’s more, deadbolts and any other type of locking systems can be added with steel security doors. If locks are weakened or exposed you may even incorporate slipcovers that can reinforce vulnerable areas. Finally, another way you can improve your door’s security is by implementing a security screen metal barrier that can even incorporate additional locks if preferred. This will basically add an additional barrier from anyone trying to enter.

How long do steel doors last?

Steel security doors installation should ideally last as long as it’s surrounding overhang does according to the National Association of Home Builders. However, if doors are left exposed to harsh elements or generally unprotected they may last as few as 30 years. As of such, you can expect a 25+ year life with metal doors.

Do steel security doors work?

Steel security doors do work as they have a thicker inner layer that is sturdy.  Although the thin outer layer can be scratched the inside can’t be penetrated. Although kicking the door can make a dent overall it will stand firm. Now if a tank comes over that’s another story.

Benefit From a Roof Restoration For Your Property

When your roof has incurred damages and you’re wondering what to do it’s important to know your options so you can get the best solution for your property. If you’re wondering when a roof restoration is needed than be sure to consider the damages made on your roof as certain cases may call for a roof restoration or replacement. As with any roofing, problem is sure to get in touch with a professional and qualified roofing contractor. A roof inspection will detail the damages and provide you with solutions to elongate the life of your roofing system. Here is some information regarding roof restorations that may be helpful for you.

What does roof restoration mean?

A roof restoration lies somewhere between a roof repair and roof replacement, yet it’s not quite a new roof installation. A roof restoration will typically add another layer of roofing protection to your existing roof. This can be done with double layers of shingles, other roofing exterior materials or even single ply roofing, yet you’ll more typically see a roof restoration handled with various types of protective roof coatings.

Is roof restoration worth it?

A roof restoration can be very beneficial for your home or business in that it will create a whole new roofing membrane that will better protect against wear and the elements. Not only that but it’ll increase your roofing’s life span so you won’t have to worry about repairs and replacement for a good amount of time.

Roof Restoration vs Replacement

A roof restoration is a great option to consider when roofing damages aren’t extensive enough to where the structure of your roof is compromised, plus you’ll be able to benefit from cheaper costs with this alternative. It all depends on your roof’s age, the type of material that’s on it as well as the climate zone in which your property is located to see if a roof restoration can be plausible. As of such, complete removal of older roofing material is recommended if a large area of your roof is rotted, has undergone extensive water damages, punctured, has caught on fire or has undergone such damages that where a replacement is better for the integrity of your roofing system.

When a Roof Restoration is Needed

  • Frequent Repairs
  • Age
  • Minor Leaks
  • Corrosion
  • Mold/Mildew
  • Cracks
  • Integrity of Roof Isn’t Compromised
  • Minor Damages/Wear

How long does a roof restoration take?

A roof restoration can take about 2-3 days depending on the extent of damages, weather conditions and other factors.

How much does roof restoration cost?

A roof restoration can range in costs from $1.50-$8 per square foot.

Does roof coating stop leaks?

A roof restoration coating is known to stop minor leaks and damages to a roofing system as the coat essentially fills into the crack or minor punctures in liquid form than expands to fill it up and solidify in the curing process. It’s important to keep in mind however that not all roof coatings are designed or able to cover roof leaks and specific manufactures may request roof repairs before application of their product. Some may only be applied to certain roofing substrates as a protection against future damages on the roofing material that lies underneath.

What is an elastomeric roof coating?

An elastomeric roof coating helps protect and seal underlying roofing material in order to prevent future weathering and can be helpful in preventing leaks. They are elastic coatings that are known for the polymers in the synthetic or natural rubber materials it is composed of. An elastomeric coating can stretch and move with your room with temperature change adjustments which makes them more durable than rigid roof coating options. An added benefit with these type of roof restoration solutions is that they can cool your roof’s temperatures from reflecting the sun’s rays as well.

What is the best elastomeric roof coating?

The best elastomeric roof coating largely depends on the type of roof that you have as typically they are made to fit with different types of roofing specifications. Flat or low sloping roofs that are either PVC or single ply may do best with butyl roof coatings while a polyurethane coating is great for EPDM rubber roofs. An acrylic roof coating is typically more popular for sloped roofs due to their added benefit of being more environmentally friendly while a silicone roof coating is preferred for polyurethane foam roofs.

Can I Extend My House?

Whether adding on or building up, home additions give you more space.

Is it cheaper to add on or build up?

Are you thinking of a remodeling project for your residence? A home addition or build up may be the right choice for you. People need to add on to their homes for a variety of reasons.

Here are some reasons to get a home addition:

  • More space: Whether your family is getting larger or you just want more room for your stuff, an addition gives you more space.
  • Increased home value: Extra space can add value to your home.
  • To modernize: Especially nice for older homes to make them feel less cramped and more open.
  • Extra income: With that additional space, you can make extra income by renting it out.

If you have a one-story home, instead of adding on you may want to build up and add an extra story. Building up is often considered a cheaper route than adding on, but that’s not always the case.

Ultimately, a few things will determine whether adding on or building up is cheaper. You’ll want to figure out the space you need. Do you just want an extra room for entertaining or recreation? Then an add-on might be the least expensive route. On the other hand, if your family is getting bigger, a new story might provide you the perfect space.

Besides knowing what your additional space will be used for, you’ll also have to figure out what fits for the size of your property. You not have the space for an extension, unless you do build up, or your house might not be designed for an extra story.

Finally, you’ll  have to make sure what your town allows for zoning when it comes to additions. You may be limited by city ordinance in building either up or out.

Whatever your home improvement desires are in Chambersburg, PA, C & J Roofing LLC. can help you fulfill them. Give us a call at 717-267-0059 to learn more about our services.

Whether you add on or build up your residential plumbing system will probably need to be adjusted as well and local plumbers will need to be consulted to get the job done right.

How much does it cost to extend a house?

As with any home improvement project, costs will vary, but the national average cost of a home extension is $43,475. The costs will vary depending on the type of extension, the contractor you hire and all associated costs such as zoning permits.

How much square footage can I add to my house

Whether you are building up or out, several variables will determine how much square footage you can add to your home. Much of it, as outlined above, will depend on the size of your property and whether your home can handle the addition. You’ll also have to check with your city’s planning and zoning board to see if there are any ordinances limiting the square footage of your home. You may also have to check with homeowners associations or even historical commissions to see how you can change your property to fit their standards.

If you have limits, there are options to additions, including renovating existing space. Attics and garages are ideal for renovation projects that may take up little or no additional space on your property.

Can you add onto a manufactured home?

The simple answer is “Yes.” You can add onto a manufactured home. But, typically it’s not recommended as a DIY project. Because of safety issues and regulations, you probably want to hire a contractor for an addition to a manufactured home.

Safety is an issue, especially when making sure your manufactured home can support the addition. Some additions like carports or porches might need to be built to structurally support itself. You’ll also be subject to local building codes in the same way other homeowners are.

What size extension can you build without planning permission?

Almost all building will require some sort of planning permission. In the U.S. almost all regulations are set by county and city ordinances and will vary by each. In sparsely populated areas you may have fewer regulations than in a densely populated area.

Your best bet is to check with your city or county zoning board as well as homeowners associations and other groups to see what permits you need. Even in cases where there are few or no ordinances in place, you may have to apply for exemptions.

Home additions require a lot of planning and design.

How to design home addition

When designing a home addition, you need to factor in everything from cost of materials and labor to building codes, as well as plumbing, heating and cooling. You’ll also need to check with your insurance company to see if your extension is covered in your policy. Other practical considerations include soil conditions, trees, a history of flooding and any rights of way problems that may arise.

Following up, you will need a contractor and probably an architect to plan out the design. A designer or draftsman may be needed to submit drawings to your city or county for permits to be approved. A structural engineer can determine if your design is safe and if it will work.

Home addition with basement

One option you might have available for a home addition is adding a basement space. Building down like that may require you to replace your old foundation or relocate your plumbing or heating and cooling system. If the basement is going to be made into a living space, you will need to add windows as well.

If you have a basement already, renovating it may prove a less costly alternative to a home addition.

Home addition and remodel

For the most part, a home addition is a remodel. Not only will your be adding space to your home, you’ll have to make changes to the existing structure so the addition fits with the design of the rest of the home.

Home addition budget

A home addition needs to be carefully budgeted. To determine your budget, you will have to know the size of your project and what costs it will entail. You will have to figure in contractors, architects and engineers, as well as permits.

You will also have to decide where you want to purchase materials. To save money, you may want to purchase materials from a bulk warehouse or home improvement store.

Instead of starting from scratch, you might consider a prefabricated addition. You can also save by determining the available tax credits. And when hiring contractors, get at least three bids.

Roof Coating Vs Replacement

Roof Coating, Roof Restoration

Roof Restoration Can Help Revitalize Your Old Roof.

Whether you are a business owner or you are a homeowner who has an older home, the state of your roof could be giving you some cause for concern. Though roof repairs can help give your home another year of life, why not look for a longer solution? Roof restoration is an alternative to roof repairs that give your roof the strength to continue on for another decade, giving you time to save up money for a new roof. Roof restoration involves putting a roof coating to help prevent further damages to the already existing roof.

What Is A Roof Coating?

A roof coating is a protective shield that is installed over top of a pre-existing roof to help prevent further damages to the roof underneath. It helps bring new life into your old roof while enabling you some extra time to save money for a full replacement later on.

Roof coatings usually come in a liquid form and have the thickness of paint. It is then “painted” onto your roof and solidifies to become a solid membrane that is watertight, which helps prevent leaks. (Leaks are one of the biggest problems facing an older roof.)

Types Of Roof Coatings

There are various different types of roof coating that are designed to meet the specific needs of the roof in question. Below you will find the two different roof coating types so that you will be able to pick which one works best for you.

Remember, if you are ever in doubt as to which roof coating you need, or if a coating would even help your roof, you can always contact your local roofing specialists. If you live in Chambersburg, PA, you can turn the team that has dedicated their lives to providing high-quality roofs to its clients, C & J Roofing LLC.. Silicone Roof Coating

Silicone Roof coating is a versatile coating that can be fitted to any roof and has a plethora of great characteristics that can help keep your roof healthy.

Its durable, helping protect your roof from harmful UV rays that lead to sun damage. It also is water resistant, repelling water so that it doesn’t pool up on your roof. This helps you avoid problems such as staining on the roof or, even worse, leaks. Also, because water has a hard time staying on a silicone roof coating, it also prevents mold and mildew from growing. It also does not soften over time, as some other roof coatings do, and it is resistant to weathering, making it last for a long time.

The only downside about silicone is that it attracts dirt like a magnet. Dirt can cause the silicone to lose its reflective properties. This isn’t a problem if you are cleaning off your roof with a hose regularly or if you are in an area that experiences rain often. Another problematic thing about silicone is that it is highly adhesive on the bottom but does not allow things to stick to it. So when you are ready for a new roof, you need to get the whole silicone roofing pulled off.

Acrylic Roof Coating

Acrylic roofing is fantastic for most environmental climates and once again, can be applied to any kind of roof. Like silicone, it has a highly reflective surface, protecting your home or business from harmful UV rays. ONe advantage that acrylic has over silicone is that it is dirt resistant, helping it maintain its beautiful aesthetic while also maintaining its reflective properties. It is also the most cost-effective option out of the two.

Acrylic roofing does have some dysfunction to it though. Unlike silicone, acrylic has a harder time of expelling water. This can cause water to build up and increasing the risk of stains. It is watertight though, so the water shouldn’t slip to the roof underneath unless there is a gap in the seams. Acrylic also has a tendency to weather over time, which could leave parts of your roof vulnerable. This can be easily combatted by applying more acrylic coating to weakened areas.

Roof Restoration vs. Replacement

There are various reasons why a roof restoration is better than a whole replacement If your roof still has some life in it, a roof restoration could leave it performing well as new for a fraction of the cost of a replacement. A restoration also increases the lifespan of your original roof, which helps buy time to raise funds for another roof.

Restoration is also an environmentally friendly option whereas a roof replacement can lead to a lot of materials being thrown out. These materials, especially asphalt shingles generally end up in landfills.

You can also receive tax benefits from a roof restoration, as it is considered a maintenance expenditure as compared to a capital expense.

The only time it would be essential to get a roof replacement if is one, your roof has naturally reached the end of the lifespan, or two there have been recurring problems. These are generally a sign that even a roof restoration couldn’t bring your old roof back from the dead. To be completely sure, it is always advised to get an opinion from a professional. They will be able to tell you accurately about whether or not your roof could come back to life with a roof restoration.

Keeping Your Deck in Good Shape Through the Winter

A Recently Stained Backyard Wood Deck

Consistent Deck Care Will Extend the Life of Your Beautiful Backyard Escape!

How do you maintain a wood deck? With careful planning and basic research! Today, we’ll be discussing the essential tasks of deck maintenance, both for annual and bi-annual care. By knowing how often to clean and re-stain your wood (and steering clear of harmful products), your family can enjoy the outdoor deck for many years to come!

What is Deck Maintenance?

The two primary purposes of deck maintenance are: to rejuvenate your wood, and to protect it from future damage. To accomplish these tasks, you’ll first need to understand how to thoroughly clean your wood. Next, you’ll need to know which staining products to embrace, and which to stay away from.

What You’ll Need to Get Started

Before you get started, carefully examine the decking for damage: degraded boards, exposed screws, etc. These need to be addressed each year to avoid unnecessary damage and/or injuries. After your inspection, it’s time to grab your materials. For the project, you’ll require:

  • Protective Glasses and Gloves
  • A Power Washer (that can supply 1200-1500 psi)
  • Sanding Equipment (for non-powered sanding, 80-grit paper)
  • Wood Deck Cleaner (oxygen or acid-based, no chlorine)
  • Your Choice of Paint, Sealant, or Stain (see notes below)

You’ll want to have the area to yourself, so make sure to talk with your family about staying off the deck during the maintenance process.

Deck Maintenance in Winter

Replacing Wood Planks

You Will Need to Replace Any Damaged Boards and Cover Exposed Screws or Nails.

Cleaning your deck is a process that should be performed annually. There are several hazards that can harm your tough but vulnerable wood, all which must be addressed during your annual deck care. Your three cleaning targets will be miscellaneous stains (BBQ sauce, etc), discolored or faded wood, and biological growth.

After you’ve removed nearby furniture and plants, the first step is to sand down your wood deck. This will remove splintering sections of wood and finish. Use fine grit paper to avoid damaging the wood. Afterwards, take a soft bristle brush and finish off the initial cleaning by removing any stubborn spots.

Your next step is to kill any algae, mold, and bacterial growth that’s developed over the course of the last year. Avoid using any chlorine based bleach products, as these can harm the appearance and composition of your wood. Instead, select an acid-based or oxygen-based bleach. There are many effective brands for the occasion, such as such as Mold Armor. Application instructions should be included on the back of each product.

The second to last step of your annual deck maintenance (or biannual) is to remove the cleaner and leftover debris with a pressure washer. Keep your power setting at a mild 1200-1500 psi, or you could harm your decking. Stick to the lower end of that range for soft wood decks. The nozzle should be held at least 8 inches away from the surface, directing water with a 45 degree spread for maximum cleaning function.

Wood Deck Protection Steps

  • Step #1: Sanding
  • Step #2: Brushing
  • Step #3: Applying Cleaner
  • Step #4: Pressure Washing
  • Step #5: Painting or Staining

Staining or Painting Your Deck

The last step for deck maintenance is applying your new paint or stain to the wood. Stains are typically recommended, because they sink into the wood for a much longer lifetime. Paint products are more likely to show their wear with time.

As for picking a staining product, that depends entirely on your personal preference and style tastes. For rustic looks, transparent or semi-transparent stains provide an excellent protective surface that doesn’t cover up the natural wood aesthetic. Make sure your stain or sealant is highly rated for UV protection, as sunlight can quickly fade exposed wood.

How Long Should a Deck Last?

A Beautiful Wood Deck

Soft Wood Decks are Vulnerable to Higher PSI Levels. Be Sure to Plan Accordingly!

With high quality wood and continued staining each year or so, your wood deck can last for up to 40 years. That’s a lot of maintenance, but it’s certainly worth the effort. If you  work becomes too difficult or time consuming to continue, there are many qualified deck maintenance services available to complete it for you. You may need to talk with a specialist if your home has a rooftop patio installation. Be sure to ask any potential care company what kind of cleaning product they use, just in case.

Metal siding is more costly but offers long life and low maintenance options. While this material is ideal for UV and water protection, hail and debris damage could be an issue since metal can be easily dented. Specialty siding such as stone, brick, and wood can offer extreme aesthetics and durability. In fact, these siding options are the most durable and long-lasting on the market. Missing Shingles

You will clearly need repairs for storm roof damage if you notice missing shingles. Strong winds and airborne debris can combine to rip shingles off your roof. This can leave your roof broadly vulnerable to leaks. If you neglect to repair this problem, the next storm will afflict your home with expensive water damage.

Damaged Shingles

Storms can damage shingles in a couple different ways. High winds can bend and crease shingles, and also send debris to scrape and scatter across your roofing. Hail represents a serious threat, and can broadly damage shingles if large enough. Hail damage typically appears like blackened spots on shingles. If the hail damages secondary layers, you may notice softened areas.

Lost Granules

Roofing shingles have their granular coating to protect against the effects of sunshine and impact damage. Over time, shingles will lose some granules naturally. Storms can cause them to lose even more, especially when the shingles themselves have grown old. High winds and debris will combine to rake your shingles and rob them of their protective granules. The place to check for this damage is actually your gutters, which is where lost granules most often appear.

Rain or shine, cold or hot, you can use this screened porch year-round. Throw a party in spring, drink a cup of hot cocoa in winter, play outside in the summer, or relax with a good book in the fall.

Great place to entertain guests

Throw parties and get-togethers inside your screened porch. Host brunch or kids’ birthday parties- the entertaining ideas are limitless.

Shade to keep cool

If it is too sunny and hot and you need to cool off, simply come into your screen room and relax as you get away from the heat. This can also help you to not get sunburnt, as you can stay in the shade.

Safe outdoor area for children

If you live in a busy, dangerous, or weather-fluctuating area, having a screen room is great when you have children. The kids can still get some fresh air and vitamin D while being safely within your sight and reach of the house.

Quiet area

Many people use their screened in porches to relax and watch the sunset, read a good book, take naps, do puzzles or other calming hobbies like knitting.
